BCE and BSD Special Education District Advisory Committee (SEDAC) in conjunction with Burlingame School District invite you to 'Helping our Kids Thrive.'  

This virtual event will focus on the emotional and mental wellbeing of our students and feature a panel of guests including:

  • Dr. Joelle Spencer, Director of Special Education

  • Wendy Alexander, Counselor

  • Fallyn Smith, Counselor

  • Julie Janc, Trauma-Informed Teacher 

Mental Health Support including Counselors are not part of the 'minimally adequate' funding provided by the state.  BSD has invested in the wellbeing of our Burlingame students thanks in part to your contributions to BCE - thank you!

Panelist Bios

Dr. Joelle Spencer

Dr. Joelle Spencer serves Burlingame School District as the Director of Special Education. Her experience in schools reflects a variety of settings in both the Central Valley and the Bay Area: Stockton, Escalon, Bay Point (West Pittsburg), Burlingame, and San Bruno. Dr. Spencer’s work as a previous School Psychologist has ranged from providing comprehensive Special Education assessments, leading IEP team meetings, supervising interns, developing district programs, and collaborating with families, co-workers, neighboring districts, and Non-Public agencies/schools to fit the unique needs of each student. She has also served as Principal for Burlingame School District’s Summer Learning programs and remains highly involved in BSD’s Mental Health and Wellness Team. In her spare time, Dr. Spencer enjoys spending time with her husband, Zack, and staying active through traveling, Zumba, hiking, swimming, biking, and bowling.

Wendy Alexander

Wendy Alexander has been a Special Education Counselor in the Burlingame School District for the last 7 years. She currently works at all seven schools in the district providing targeted mental health services and individual weekly therapy for students with Individual Education Plans. Ms. Alexander holds a Master's in Counseling Psychology, with an emphasis in Marriage Family Therapy, as well as a Master's in Counseling Education with a PPS. She is a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist and has a private practice in the SF Bay Area, where she specializes in adolescents and children. Ms. Alexander is married and has three adult children who have all finished college and have successfully launched! She loves running, traveling, and being with her family.  ​

Fallyn Smith

Fallyn Smith, MSW, PPSC is one of our District Elementary School Counselors. She's been with Burlingame School District since 2013, where she was hired as the first elementary school counselor, serving all five schools in the district. She now provides services for Franklin, Lincoln and Hoover. She received her Master's in Social Work from San Diego State University and her BA from the University of Maryland-College Park. Fallyn has a passion for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and spearheaded the district-wide SEL program for all elementary schools. Fallyn lives in San Francisco with her husband, and when she's not in elementary school, you can find her on her yoga mat, out in nature, or trying a new restaurant in the city.​

Julie Janc

Julie Janc

Julie Janc has been an elementary school teacher in the Burlingame School District for 11 years. In addition, she holds a Master's in Counselor Education and has provided therapy and support to families and individuals in Baltimore and the San Francisco Bay Area. She has been a trauma-informed facilitator of a support group for parents and caregivers of foster, adopted, and other at-risk children. She currently lives with her husband in Burlingame and both of her children are graduates of Burlingame public schools.
